A " new" 30 Cal

NE Newton 3 years ago

Greetings all and a peaceful and prosperous new year
After some experimentation , some machining , and modifications
What I thought the 300 Win Mag should have been
See images attached
I understand that this might not be anyone else's cup of tea but it is what appealed to me

Some rationale ...
Headstamp is the same as on license - hole in the barrel is the same
NO BELT = easier reloading
Shorter case with COAL to fit long bullets in standard size action ( HOWA )
Without bullet being pushed deeply into powder in case
Longer neck for more bullet stability
Most important of all the re-worked case appeals to me !

A template of the proposed cartridge was drawn up using QuickDESIGN
A simulation was done using QuickLOAD which showed performance close to the original
then
A standard LEE FL die was machined and modified ( a few trines )
It is now to all intents and purposes accurate as to the template diagram
A few sacrificial cases had their belts removed and were then processed - to end up with the final product
Bearing some resemblance to a .30 Newton and a Schuler 8x68
Re-sizing was done on a LEE challenger press ( which coped fine )
A LEE universal de-prime die was used
A 30-06 collet neck size die works fine for neck-sizing
An RCBS seater die was used for seating the bullet ( Berger 175 VLD )
Still some final fine detailed work to do ( accurate neck dimensions )
then
The purchase of a chamber reamer to make up / modify a barrel and test firing
Hoping to get that done this year
I am quite excited

Great project, well done.

Always refreshing to witness the ingenuity and determination of someone not satisfied with what everyone else is satisfied with, and make their own.

On a side note, the belt does not complicate the reloading process at all for me, I just ignore it. Size the fired case to fit the chamber as if there was no belt.

The short, fat cartridges do present a new set of challenges when reliable magazine feeding comes into play, especially when long for caliber, heavy bullets are used. Physical geometry of the cartridge together with the popular marriage to small actions make for interesting feeding problems.

No sweat - a leade to the bullets I need would be appreciated

People have problems when the chamber is not cut correctly
IF head-spaced on the belt then the case can stretch to fit the shoulder to the "gap" in the chamber leading to case separation.
Nearly all of the "range-pickup" cases I have are swollen just ahead of the belt
IF head-spaced on the belt what use is the shoulder ?

"MAGNUM" marketing overcame all difficulties - and belted obsolescence

Short fat cartridges and feeding problems .. see it all the time on the YouTube channels

An update and final design:

COAL increased to 64mm / shoulder to 12.47mm / shoulder angle to 56deg

Few things to check before making / machining a body die to form cases and send to reamer maker
( Working backwards )

Match chamber and dies so brass is worked as little as possible

Take down 30-06 barrel can be re-chambered to test - before getting a brand new barrel

Will achieve slightly slower but similar velocities to Newton with less powder

Now it looks just like a 30 Newton.

Now it looks just like a 30 Newton.

Yes close but not the same
Original 30 Newton brass can be obtained ( when a batch is run ) - at about US$5.00 a case
My whole raison d'etre for this development is that 300WM brass is readily available and "cheap"
Then there is the license aspect as well - and another rifle / barrel / change cartridge / calibre ...

Useable case capacities in gr H2O:

Given are approximate case capacities, in grains of water to fill the case to the mouth
Dependent on maker of cartridge case brass

 • 7mm Rem Mag 84gr
 • 30 Newton 88gr
 • 300 Win Mag 89gr
 • 338 Win Mag 86gr
 • 308 Norma Magnum 88gr
 • Mine 87gr

You can license a new barrel for a rifle even if it's a different caliber, it goes on record as a second barrel for the same rifle.

Much less hassle.

I am confused - not being pedantic nor smart arse, genuine question.
Barrel - action - weapon. Licence a barrel, yes, understood. Licence a barrel, yes understood. A combination of both is then a weapon . To licence a 2 nd barrel for that weapon = a two barrel weapon ?
Then if you have a action lying around, putting that barrel on it makes it a weapon for which u need a licence again.
If I break my action, I have a illegal barrel licenced as a weapon ? I can carry on with this ................
Is it all rather convoluted or am i reading it all wrong?

Theoretically, one buys a second, third and fourth set of barrels for a shotgun, then one has one set for trap, one for skeet, one 16ga for the missus, and one in .410 for the kids.

License them accordingly, and carry the correct licenses.

Similar with a rifle, although the change of barrels is more permanent unless it is designed to do so, like the Blasers.

Yes ..
However how long does the licensing process take ?
How much is a new barrel blank / cutting threads / chambering etc ?
Far as I know HOWA does not provide fitted chambered barrels - only a barrelled action ?

I already have a HOWA 300 Win Mag ..with a 308 barrel - thus the use of and modification of the 300WM
It would be quite possible to have multiple barrels for the same action - for future wildcats
For when I am a millionaire ,, :) ;D

I rather think the authorities consider the chambered barrel to be .. "THE weapon" ?
In the "old-days" far as I remember this was where the emphasis was - there was no noting EVERY part with a serial number / any number / mark ?

You're overthinking it.

It's simple - you can license a second barrel for a rifle.

I think that's the mechanism in place for switch barrel rifles, and the T/C variety, which you can make use of.

The licensing process is the same.

A new barrel can cost as much as you wish to pay for it.

Add about 3k for chambering and threading, even if you provide the reamer.

There's no need to buy a Howa barrel, buy a barrel blank or get a barrel made, it can be threaded for a Howa action.

Buying a barrelled action is licensing a whole rifle. If you remove the barrel to use elsewhere, that is a completely different and complicated story to just licensing a new barrel.

Yes licensing a new barrel and a change of calibre is from all the reports I have read a long wait nightmare ?
Only mentioned HOWA and barrel as that is what the action / receiver is - and the fact that they do not supply barrels
I understand about any other barrel blank from the other barrel makers
As I understand a new barrel ranges in price from approx R5,000 up to R9,000.00 even from SA manufacturers
Perhaps you know of somewhere cheaper ?

That is the price of new barrels, I'd be downright suspicious of anything cheaper.

Licensing an additional barrel is not the same as a license change of caliber.

The original license and caliber remain unchanged.

30 Nosler

0.344 = 8.7376

0.528 = 13.4112

0.534 = 12.5636

0.550 = 13.97

2.115 = 53.721

2.246 = 57.0484

2.556 = 64.9224

3.340 = 84.836

Rebated rim = no thank you
Shoulder is very tight 35 deg x 2 = 70deg
Case capacity gr H2O = 97.5 - 102

The case capacities in grains of H20 are as follows, Peterson ~97.5, Nosler ~ 99 grains, Bertram ~100, and ADG~102. These are all fired brass measurements to the top of the neck. We feel this is the best way to measure, as “usable” capacity is arbitrary. Of these options, ADG is my favorite. It is very consistent, strong, and has the largest capacity. It, combined with somewhere around .200” of freebore, will be most likely to allow you to run a 215 Berger at the 3100FPS node with H1000 and a 26” barrel.
